Job Title:                Sr. Manager of Government Affairs

Reports To:           Vice President of Government Affairs

FLSA Category:      Exempt


SUMMARY: The Sr. Manager of Government Affairs is responsible for working with Congress, federal Agencies, the Administration, and the membership to develop TIA policy recommendations and advance those priorities. The Sr. Manager of Government Affairs, working with the Vice President of Government Affairs and the CEO is responsible for implementing the government affairs and policy positions adopted by the TIA Board.



  1. Develop and work with the Vice President of Government Affairs to implement the overall strategy for TIA policy and advocacy efforts to meet the needs of the 3PL industry and the goals in the Strategic Plan:
    1. Increase the political effectiveness of TIA.
    2. Develop and oversee TIA’s external relationships with members, associates, other associations, Members of Congress and their staff, and Administrative Agencies.
    3. Plan, review, and manage the TIA Government Affairs budget.
    4. Explore and evaluate new technologies, techniques, approaches, or philosophies for importation into advocacy.
    5. Organize and host an annual Fly-In of TIA members.
    6. Execute and manage the Government Affairs and PAC portions of the Strategic Plan.
  2. Manage TIA’s Policy-related Conferences and Committees:
    1. Manage the conference and committee structure for the development of C dissemination of information.
    2. Increase member involvement through the conference and committee involvement.
  3. Manage TIA’s Political Action Committee, TIAPAC through advocacy, management and compliance.
  4. Manage member questions and special projects, reports, guidelines, model contracts, etc.
  5. Participate in industry committees and at events representing TIA and the 3PL industry.
  6. Other duties as assigned by the Vice President of Government Affairs, Chief of Staff or Chief Executive Officer.



  • A minimum of 4 years of government relations, policy or other applicable experience.     
  • Organized self-starter capable of making independent decisions affecting the development and implementation of all aspects of TIA.
  • Accurate, detail oriented, and capable of managing multiple tasks and meeting assigned deadlines.
  • Excellent telephone and in-person customer service skills.
  • Proven experience in working on Capitol Hill or Administrative Agencies.
  • Proven written communication ability.


  • Language Ability: Ability to read, analyze, and interpret general business periodicals, professional journals, technical procedures, or governmental regulations. Ability to write reports, business correspondence, and procedure manuals. Ability to proofread and edit reports, journals, and procedure manuals. Ability to effectively present information and respond to questions from groups of managers, members, and the general public.


  • Reasoning Ability: Ability to define problems, collect data, establish facts, and draw valid conclusions. Ability to interpret an extensive variety of opinions and pull into a concise and achievable goal.


  • Skills: To perform this job successfully, an individual should have knowledge of word processing software; spreadsheet software; ability to read financial reports; ability to utilize the iMis database; and the ability to utilize government affairs software.


  • Certificates and Licenses: None needed.


  • Work Environment: General office conditions.


  • Physical Demands: While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to sit and use hands to finger, handle, or feel. The employee is frequently required to talk or hear. The employee is occasionally required to stand, walk, reach with hands and arms, and stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl. The employee must occasionally lift and/or move up to 25 pounds. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision.


  • Travel: To perform this job successfully, an individual may be required to travel, including travel over weekends.
