SUMMARY DESCRIPTION

The Regional Advocacy Director, Western Region is responsible for providing hands-on strategic and tactical advice to state and local tobacco control coalitions on legislative issues in the Western Region of the United States (Currently: Alaska, Idaho, Montana, Nevada, Oregon, Utah and Washington,).

 

PRIMARY DUTIES

  • Provide strategic, tactical advice and technical assistance on behalf of the Campaign to local and state coalitions working on tobacco control issues throughout the region.
  • Assist state coalitions with bill drafting, lobbying, media advocacy, grassroots development and mobilization, and grant applications.
  • Mobilize and manage the Campaign’s resources as appropriate on behalf of specific advocacy campaigns.
  • Make recommendations to Campaign headquarters on potential funding of state initiatives.
  • Represent the Campaign at national, state, and local meetings.
  • Interact with local media, policymakers, and other key officials as necessary.
  • Maintain strong communications with the Vice President, State Advocacy, other Regional Advocacy Directors, and key Washington, DC based personnel.
  • Maintain positive relationships with national and local partner organizations. Ensure good coordination of efforts with partners in the Western Region.
  • Maintain good communication with other Campaign departments and staff to inform them of legislative developments within the region. This includes weekly conference calls, status reports, and occasional meetings in the Washington, DC office.
  • Develop and manage strategies to recruit, retain, and mobilize grassroots activists in the Region.
  • Serve as a resource to states on policy issues.
  • Perform other tasks as directed by the Vice President, State Issues.

Requirements

QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Five (5) years demonstrated experience with state and/or local lobbying and politics.
  • Five (5) years of successful experience in designing and executing lobbying or campaign strategy for legislative campaigns and/or ballot referendum initiatives and/or advocacy-oriented organizations.
  • Experience should include conducting community outreach, grassroots and grasstops cultivation, field strategy development, and public education efforts.
  • Experience working with broad-based, diverse coalitions.
  • Knowledge of state legislative and political processes.
  • Established commitment to the issue of tobacco control.
  • Strong written and oral communication skills.
  • Ability to set priorities and work independently.
  • Ability to work in a fast-paced, team-oriented environment while juggling projects and deadlines. This includes working with other Regional Directors as well as headquarters operations in Washington, DC.
  • Bachelor’s degree or higher.
  • Ability to travel as necessary throughout the Region; sometimes on short notice.
  • Knowledge of and proficiency with a variety of computer software applications including Microsoft Word, Excel, Access, PowerPoint and Outlook.
