The National Propane and Gas Association is looking for a Manager, State and Municipal Advocacy to join our team in our Washington, DC office. Primary responsibility is to serve as a propane industry advocate on key state- and municipal-level legislative and regulatory issues, providing complementary advocacy services to improve the reach and effectiveness of affiliated state and regional propane gas associations. Duties include developing and maintaining relationships with key external policy makers, primarily on the state and local level, to promote the industry’s objectives. Additional duties include monitoring actions by state and local government entities that could impact the propane industry and, when necessary, coordinating a response. 

NOTE: Hybrid work arrangement (3 days in office; 2 days work from home) 

What you will do 

  • Serve as a propane industry advocate on key state and municipal level legislative and regulatory issues to promote the use of propane and create a favorable business environment for NPGA members.
  • Represent the propane industry and pursue engagement opportunities at meetings of the National Association of State Energy Officials, National Association of Regulatory Utility Commissioners, National Energy Assistance Directors Association, National Conference of State Legislatures, and others as assigned; attend state/regional propane association meetings.
  • Monitor state public service commission filings to identify potential threats to the propane industry.
  • Monitor actions by municipal governments to ban gas infrastructure and restrict energy choice in favor of electrifying buildings and transportation.  
  • Conduct research and draft industry comment letters regarding state energy policies and utility filings that can be legislative or regulatory in nature.
  • Spearhead grassroots advocacy campaigns.

Travel and Hybrid Work

  • Travel up to 30% of the time.
  • Hybrid work arrangement (3 days in office; 2 days work from home)

Salary

 

  • Annual salary is $70,000 - $72,000, depending on experience, plus bonus potential. This is an opportunity to grow and assume greater responsibility over time.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s Degree and 4+ years of experience.
  • Experience as a staffer for a state lawmaker, utility ratemaking and monitoring utility filings, and/or experience with organizations representing state government and energy/utility interests preferred.
  • Excellent written, editing, and verbal communication skills, including the ability to master complex issues and convey information clearly to varied audiences.
  • Strong attention to detail and ability to meet strict deadlines.
  • Must be highly motivated and team oriented.
  • Excellent organizational skills, with the ability to manage multiple priorities and projects simultaneously.
  • Thorough knowledge of Microsoft Office and technical proficiency in database management.
