Legislative Liaison
Chicago, IL

The American Dental Association is dedicated to promoting the public's health through its initiatives in research, education, advocacy, public awareness and the development of standards.

The Legislative Liaison is the main contact point for the department with constituent society volunteers and staff on legislative and regulatory activities in the states. The Legislative Liaison is responsible for establishing and maintaining contact, having knowledge of these activities from across the nation, and developing resources (such as tool kits and strategies) to increase dentistry's advocacy capacity. Further, the Liaison will assist in the management of the SPA relationship with the national consultant.

 

Minimum Qualifications:

  • BS/BA
  • A minimum of 5 years of experience in the political/government field within a non-profit association, business, legislative body or administrative office (i.e. governor's office, etc).
  • Excellent oral and written communications history.
  • The ability to be an effective advocacy communicator in both oral and written formats.
  • Must have the ability to analyze the political ramifications of varied situations and bring in current and historical knowledge of legislative activities in states across the nation.
  • Major in political science, communications or related discipline.
  • Public speaking experience required as well as significant writing skills with the creation of legislative testimony, press releases, speeches, e.tc
  • Must be proficient with WORD and PowerPoint for written communications and presentations.
  • Working knowledge of EXCEL is required
  • Must be available evenings and weekends for acute situations and Council, Task Force meetings. Additionally, extensive travel can be required for events like Council meetings, constituent visits, national advocacy meetings, meetings with other organizations, etc.

Highly Desirable Skills:

  • Master's degree in political science, public administration or communications.
  • A Law degree.
  • Experience with a health care professional association, experience with state (as opposed to federal) legislative and regulatory tracking processes and software, including operational knowledge of data tracking services like StateNet, Lexis/Nexis or Westlaw.
  • Advanced internet navigational and research skills.
