The National Electrical Manufacturers Association (NEMA) is the U.S. trade association for electrical equipment and medical imaging manufacturers. NEMA crafts and executes advocacy and government relations campaigns, develops performance and other product Standards, and provides business analytics to assist member companies with business decisions.

The Director, Industry and State Government Relations supports Member companies on international/federal/state policies, laws, and regulations pertaining to industry use of chemicals, extended producer responsibility, and related matters. The Director also has responsibility for tracking and analyzing State government activity on legislative and regulatory matters affecting the electroindustry, including adoption of safety/efficiency codes. The Director promotes industry positions to elected officials and regulatory authorities, develops technical comments on rulemakings, and assists in drafting legislation. The position reports to the NEMA Vice President of Government Relations and is in Rosslyn (Arlington), Virginia. Travel up to approximately 25 per cent of the time is possible.

Key Responsibilities

  • Lead development and implementation of legislative and regulatory strategies at the direction of Member company representatives
  • Assess potential impact on Members of global government regulatory developments pertaining to environment and public health & safety and implement effective response strategies
  • Manage NEMA advocacy program at the State level 


  • Undergraduate degree required – advanced degree preferred
  • Five+ years of experience in government relations – two or more years working at State level a plus
  • Familiarity with Federal and State legislative and regulatory procedures
  • Demonstrated knowledge of US EH&S policy and regulations a potential differentiator
  • Strong group leadership skills – adept at balancing competing viewpoints and driving to successful outcomes
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills, adept at advocating in public forums and possessed of executive presence in all settings
  • Self-motivated and pro-active – comfortable managing multiple projects within fast-paced, outcome-oriented environment
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite, (Word, PowerPoint, Excel) and capable of learning/applying advance digital tools.
