Lead all ACC activities related to coding and reporting of cardiovascular physician services. Develop and implement coherent, coordinated strategy for achieving ACC policy objectives with AMA Current Procedural Terminology (CPT®) Editorial Panel, International Classification of Diseases (ICD-10) Coordination and Maintenance Committee, and other relevant bodies. Develop and implement strategy for educating ACC members on correct coding and reporting of cardiovascular physician services.

Major Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Primary staff liaison to AMA CPT Editorial Panel. Coordinate development of coding proposals with ACC members, cardiovascular (CV) societies, and other stakeholders. Provide guidance and recommendations to ACC representatives in developing and implementing strategies for ensuring adoption of ACC proposals. Facilitate ACC representatives’ participation in the CPT Advisory Committee process. Work with AMA staff to resolve issues related to coding for cardiovascular services.
  • Staff liaison for ACC Coding Work Group. Develop agenda and background materials. Schedule and lead meetings and conference calls. Draft minutes. Align coding efforts with AMA RUC staff liaison and advisors.
  • Provide expert advice on procedural (CPT) and diagnostic (ICD) coding for cardiovascular services to members, committees, and other ACC staff, such as the Health Affairs Committee, Education Division, and Science and Quality Division.
  • Analyze proposed regulations and policies affecting coding under Medicare, including physician fee schedule, hospital prospective payment systems, National Correct Coding Initiative (NCCI), local and national Medicare coverage policy, alternative payment models, and others. Provide staff leadership for developing ACC response, coordinating process with CV societies and other stakeholders as needed.
  • Oversee ACC coding education services and projects, including responses to members’ coding questions. Partner with Communications Team to optimize coding information across member communication channels, including weekly e-newsletter, social media, acc.org website, etc.
  • Monitor activities of advisory groups related to coding issues for cardiologists (e.g., National Committee on Vital and Health Statistics).
  • Other duties as required.


Required Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree required.
  • At least five years of professional experience, including demonstrated expertise in coding, payment policy, and reporting of physician services (cardiology experience preferred).
  • Experience managing projects or programs in a deadline-driven environment.
  • Strong written and oral communication skills required.
  • Demonstrated ability to work effectively with multiple stakeholders.
  • Ability to effectively represent ACC to CMS, AMA, CV specialty organizations, and industry.
  • Excellent analytical skills and demonstrated success in communicating complex information to key stakeholders.
  • Ability and willingness to travel 4-5 times/year (including to CPT, ACC, RUC, ICD-10).

 Desired Qualifications:

  • CPC/CCS and/or master’s degree in relevant field desirable.
  • In-depth knowledge of AMA CPT Editorial Panel process and ICD-10-CM diagnosis coding is strongly preferred.
  • Experience working with/for a medical society.
