Amnesty International USA (AIUSA) is the global organization’s presence in the United States. We engage people in the U.S. to fight injustice all around the world, while we also work to protect people’s human rights here in the U.S. AIUSA has more than a million members and activists in all 50 states and the District of Colombia, who are part of a larger global movement of 10 million people in 150 countries. We are a non-partisan, democratically governed, grassroots membership organization, which means that our members vote on key governance and deep policy issues and elect our Board of Directors. Some of our members are experts on specific human rights issues, parts of the world, or advocacy areas, and they serve as volunteer leaders. Others are volunteer leaders of local or student groups in towns, universities, states, or regions of the country. Members work together with a talented staff, deployed across six departments to deliver on our mission. 

 

Job Summary

AIUSA is seeking a highly strategic, innovative and collaborative leader to serve as Chief Strategy and Impact Officer (CSIO) and significantly strengthen the organization’s power and impact during a time of evolution across human rights. The CSIO will join the Executive Team (E-team), who reports to the Executive Director, and together will lead AIUSA in the implementation of a new Strategic Framework aimed at identifying, amplifying and investing in new and promising approaches to drive greater human rights impact and achieve lasting results.

 

The CSIO, in partnership with the E-Team, Board of Directors, AIUSA Staff, and Member Leadership, will work toward advancing the global movement’s human rights agenda by aligning AIUSA resources and efforts in ways that enable us to engage both internationally and domestically, empowering our staff and members to engage on priority movement-wide efforts. 

 

The CSIO will oversee multiple AIUSA teams (US government relations, corporate advocacy, programs, marketing and communications, research, and campaigning) to deliver human rights influence and impact in the United States and around the world. Working closely with the Executive Director and other members of the E-team, the CSIO will develop and operationalize annual plans with a renewed focus on experimentation and learning that allows AIUSA to remain nimble and adaptive as the context changes, and campaign effectively across a greater number of areas. The CSIO will also work in close collaboration with the Chief Movement Building and Member Engagement Officer and the Chief Development officer to grow and harness our people power by strengthening our core capabilities of research, organizing, and mobilizing members, donors and activists, campaigning and advocacy, external communications and human rights education (HRE). The CSIO will also work closely with our General Counsel and Chief Inclusion, Diversity, Equity and Accountability (IDEA) and People and Culture Officer to lead our organizational transformation to be an organization that is more anti-racist, thinks in intersectional ways, and has values centered on IDEA.

 

Essential Responsibilities

Leadership and Supervision

The CSIO will lead and supervise:

  • The Government Relations National Director (ND) to deliver influence with the United States government, with a particular emphasis on influencing US foreign policy and its impact on human rights around the world.

  • The Programs National Director whose unit primarily focuses on the outcomes in our Strategic Framework.

  • The Marketing and Communications National Director who oversees our website and other digital spaces, our social and traditional media work, and the broad communications strategy.

  • The Research National Director who develops the research foundations for our human rights impact work in the United States and collaborates with our international movement on our global research agenda.

  • The Campaigns and Crisis Response National Director, who coheres our organizational resources across staff and membership to deliver human rights influence in the United States on our AIUSA and the global AI campaigns agenda.

  • The Silicon Valley Initiative/Tech and Human Rights National Director who oversees all our engagement with the United States’ technology corporate sector generally and our efforts to hold US technology corporations accountable for their human rights impact in particular, as well as our lobbying efforts aimed at local, state and federal government agencies on issues related to tech and human rights.

As an Executive Team Member, the CSIO will:

  • Advance our broad organizational imperatives to increase our human rights impact in the United States and around the world, and to transform our section towards greater relevance by being more effectively anti-racist, intersectional, transparent and values-driven in everything we do.

  • Represent the interests and concerns of Strategy and Impact Department on the E-team, with members and with the Board of Directors.

  • Represent the interests and concerns of other departments, membership, the board and the Executive Director to leadership and staff of the Strategy and Impact department in the spirit of building a collaborative culture.

Cross-organizationally, the CSIO will:

  • Foster trusting and collaborative working relationships across Amnesty constituents, including with other Executive Team (E-team) members, the board of directors, staff and member leaders in ways that drive organization-wide effectiveness.

  • Lead, develop, amend, adapt, cohere and communicate strategic initiatives to deliver impact across all areas of CSIO oversight, working closely with teams and leaders in the Strategy and Impact Department and across the organization.

  • Demonstrated ability to work across diverse organizational constituencies, such as boards, staff, volunteers, and various external stakeholders in ways that drive organizational effectiveness.  

  • Ability to support the leadership, success, and professional development of staff members, with a commitment to utilizing power to ensure equitable access and opportunities for staff of color and other underrepresented identities. 

  • Demonstrated ability to embed Inclusion, Diversity, Equity and Accessibility (IDEA) best practices into strategy and operations. 

  • Demonstrated executive/senior leadership skills and abilities in enterprise-level strategic and operational planning and delivering on strategic programs impact. 

  • Demonstrated project management skills and ability to successfully manage multiple competing priorities. 

  • Deep competence in change management best practices and implementation required, to include competence around human behavioral change required for long lasting organizational change.

  • This role has 6 direct reports and 30+ indirect reports.   

Strategic and Presentational Skills 

  • Must have a demonstrated ability to lead, develop, amend, adapt, cohere and communicate strategic initiatives to deliver impact in close collaboration with multiple teams. 

  • Must have strong written and verbal skills in an increasingly virtual working world, and demonstrated success in communicating with advocacy targets, Board of Directors, staff, direct reports, and external partners in effective ways that adapt to this increasingly virtual work environment.   

Human Rights Content Expertise 

  • Strong command of how the United States government shapes and impacts human rights overseas across the Executive and Congressional Branches and must have a deep understanding and interest in civil, political, economic, cultural and social rights around the world.   

  • Strong command of human rights challenges and opportunities in the United States, ideally with specific experience in the fields of gun violence, racial justice, gender justice, the death penalty, national security, climate justice, economic inequality, and refugee and migrant rights.  

  • Understanding of how USG Policy can be shaped to protect and defend human rights defenders and individuals at risk in the United States and around the world.  

  • Understanding of how a human rights organization uses its digital, social media, web based and traditional media power to influence the US government and ability to develop an overall communications strategy for the organization that remains evergreen.  

  • Understanding and appreciation for how strategic research can advance our human rights agenda in the United States. 

  • Ability to conceptualize and co-develop strategic campaigns both long-term (3-12 months) and crisis/rapid response (1-4 weeks), and to work with other departments to martial the campaigning power of AI in the United States across staff, board and membership.   

  • Understand corporate advocacy and how to shape and engage the power of US corporations to advance human rights.  

  • Ability to occasionally travel required, e.g., E-team and staff retreats, regional office visits, annual AIUSA conferences and visits to witness human rights concerns both domestically and internationally.

  • Ability to occasionally work evenings and/or weekends required, e.g., Board meetings, member calls. 

Education and Experience 

  • BA/BS or equivalent years of experience required. 

  • 15 years of progressively responsible experience required, to include human rights program development and government advocacy work. 

  • 5 years of senior organizational leadership and direct people management experience required. 

  • Experience managing in geographically dispersed, hybrid/remote organizations preferred. 

  • Occasional evening and/or weekend availability required.
