Who we are looking for:
 

ASCO is in search of a high performing Associate Director, Congressional Affairs to join the Policy and Advocacy department. The selected candidate will provide specialized experience in leading ASCO’s government relations efforts by representing ASCO’s advocacy positions to the U.S. Congress and external organizations and assisting in the development of legislative analysis and strategies.

 

 

 

 

Requirements

What you will do: 

  • Serve as a registered lobbyist for ASCO, develop and maintain strategic relationships with key congressional offices, and communicate ASCO positions to the U.S. Congress through meetings, testimony, letters, and other forums

  • Attend political events on behalf of ASCO Association PAC

  • Represent ASCO in coalitions and with external organizations

  • Identify and pursue opportunities to raise ASCO’s visibility on Capitol Hill, position ASCO to testify before key congressional committees, monitor pending legislative activities, and analyze legislative proposals in a timely manner

  • Prepare substantive legislative updates for membership communications

  • Assist the Director, Congressional Affairs, in providing strategic leadership to the Government Relations Committee and other ASCO committees on legislative issues and strategies, coordinate with grassroots staff to identify opportunities for outreach on legislative activities and help prepare alerts and sample letters, provide legislative presentations and lobby training for Hill events and committee and state affiliate meetings, and serve as resource for ASCO members on legislative issues

  • Arrange meetings with members of Congress and their staff for ASCO volunteers and coordinate legislative programs including briefings and receptions

 

What you will need in order to be successful:  

  • Bachelor’s degree

  • 10+ years of legislative or lobbying experience, legislative, electoral, and organizing work, significant experience in legislative campaigns or experience working in Congress or a state legislative body

  • Thorough knowledge of developing legislative solutions to advance an organization's policy goals

  • A working understanding of legislative procedure and the ability to quickly figure out the ins and outs of an unfamiliar legislative issue

  • Experience communicating effectively with both Republican and Democratic elected officials and their staff

  • Demonstrated analytical and research skills, including the ability to distill information

  • Excellent communication skills (verbal and written) necessary to effectively interact with all levels of internal organization and external stakeholders

  • High level of energy to thrive in a fast-paced environment, self-motivation to work independently and as a member of a team, and ability to plan and prioritize workload and meet deadlines

 

Ideal candidates will also contribute:  

  • J.D. or master's degree in policy or political science

  • Knowledge of issues impacting cancer care and research

  • Health care background
