The University of California's Office of Federal Governmental Relations is located at the UC Washington Center in Washington, DC. As the largest public research institution in the world, the university engages in numerous partnerships with federal education, health care and research agencies. Working with Congress, the administration, federal departments and agencies, and national organizations, we advocate for the university and its policy and fiscal priorities in education, research, health care and public service.

The Advocacy and Government Relations Staff Assistant position, reporting to the Director of Communications and Advocacy, performs administrative, advocacy, communications and legislative-related activities across a range of issues in support of the University of California (UC) priorities, including helping to run the University's grassroots advocacy network, monitoring and engaging on social media and other digital communications channels, assisting with the development and use of advocacy materials, scheduling and event planning, legislative research, and covering congressional hearings and other meetings. While the position works with the legislative, advocacy and communications staff, the Staff Assistant assists the Operations Manager as requested. The position is based in UC's Office Federal Governmental Relations (FGR) office, located in Washington, DC. UC FGR serves as the University's liaison to the federal government, working with Congress, the administration, federal departments and agencies, and national organizations to advance UC's priorities. UC FGR advocates for the university and its missions in education, research, health care and public service.


Advocacy: The Staff Assistant serves as part of the team that coordinates the University's grassroots advocacy network, which includes attending meetings, supporting activities that maintain the network's presence and growth, and assisting with the development and maintenance of federal content, including, but not limited to, digital and social media campaigns, email and text communications, digital advocacy platform management and social media engagement. The Staff Assistant supports other advocacy activities, including student engagement, webinars and additional special projects as assigned. In coordination with the policy directors and other senior staff, the Staff Assistant assists in the development, implementation and execution of advocacy-related events and materials, as well as the use and dissemination of those materials. The Staff Assistant provides administrative and logistical support for UC FGR legislative, advocacy and other related events and outreach activities, including helping to execute digital advocacy, social media engagement and other activities that complement legislative advocacy.

Office Operations and Administrative Support: The Staff Assistant provides administrative support, including answering phones and greeting office visitors, scheduling meetings – including with congressional members and staff – assisting with advocacy events and helping to execute in-office meetings between UC FGR staff and visiting university representatives. The Staff Assistant assists with quarterly lobby disclosure reporting and assists the Operations Manager in the administrative support of travel arrangements, invoice payments and employee reimbursements.

Communications: The Staff Assistant assists in the development of communications, advocacy and legislative-related materials for use with members of the University community, federal partners and the general public, including letters, talking points, newsletters, reports and background materials. The Staff Assistant assists in the development, distribution and maintenance of digital communications, such as social media, email, website and other digital communications channels. The Staff Assistant helps monitor and engage with social media and other digital communications channels and reports out as needed.

Legislative Support: Under the direction of the Director of Communications and Advocacy, and in coordination with the legislative staff, the Staff Assistant tracks legislation, performs legislative research and assists with the development of legislative materials. The Staff Assistant covers and reports on legislative hearings, briefings and other relevant meetings, as well as other association, industry and coalition partner activities. In addition, the Staff Assistant responds to information requests, develops and analyzes written communications, summarizes reports and works on special projects as assigned.

Required Qualifications

  • Must possess strong interpersonal skills, knowledge of and appreciation for political sensitivities and the ability to work effectively as a member of a team of professionals.
  • 1-3 years of experience in advocacy or governmental relations and researching complex subject matters.
  • Proven written, verbal communication skills, including the political acumen to effectively represent the University of California. Must be able to formulate and express ideas and concepts in a clear and concise manner, draft and edit materials using proper grammar, style, punctuation and protocol.
  • Analytical and critical thinking skills. Active listening skills to ensure that important points are noted and clearly communicated.
  • Must have knowledge of Microsoft Office, Adobe, and the ability to quickly master new programs and technologies.
  • Excellent attention to detail as demonstrated by regularly verifying all work thoroughly to ensure accuracy.

    Preferred Qualifications
  • Demonstrated ability to analyze national trends, issues and policy developments in areas of University interest.
  • Exposure to the legislative environment and/or the University of California strongly preferred.

  • Bachelor's degree in political science, public administration, communications or a related field or a combination of education and work experience.
